After being jostled several times by the shifting crowd, Annie found a place to stand out of the way but kept her eyes on the spot where she was supposed to meet Dominic. The night had been a whirlwind of emotion, and she was content to stand quietly for a few minutes to let them all settle. She was falling for Dominic, falling hard, and had no idea how to stop it, wasn’t even sure that she wanted to, was already slightly addicted to the way he made her feel.

Already on shaky ground, now she was really in trouble, the thought of violating Dominic’s trust and ruining what was growing between them made her feel sick, and as she stood there, she desperately tried to think of a way out. She was still scared of Mr. Sparks, afraid that he would hurt Toby, but with each passing hour she spent with Dominic, it was becoming more and more difficult to see herself doing what he wanted.

Forcing herself not to think about it, giving herself the rest of the night to just enjoy herself, she focused on the people around her. “Well, Joe, what do you think?” a man behind her asked the man standing next to him. “Do you think the problems with the cattle will start up again this spring? Dominic keeps telling us that he has everything under control, but it doesn’t look like he’s doing anything.”

“I don’t know, Roger,” Joe said, shaking his head. “Dominic’s a good man, but I will tell you this, if I catch any of Spark’s men on my property, I’m going to shoot first and ask questions later.”

“Yeah, me too. I’m not having any of my cattle mutilated,” Roger said, his voice full of anger. “And no one is going to run me off my ranch.”

“And what about those snot-nosed brats trapping beavers on Matt Gardener’s land? They were planning to hang them from city hall,” Joe said, shaking his head. “I heard they were going to string them up and cut them open, spread their guts all over the place.”

“I don’t know what this world is coming to. I feel bad for all those people up in Marshall that Sparks drove out,” Roger said. “But I’m not letting anyone burn me out. I’m running patrols every night, and I think most of the other ranchers are too.”

“Yeah, that’s what I heard out at the feed store,” Joe said. “I’m going to give some serious thought to doing that too, especially once it warms up and we have to put the cattle out to graze. It’s going to cost me, though.”

“That’s a shame. Maybe we should call a meeting of the clan,” Roger said. “If we all team up together, Sparks won’t stand a chance, and this will give the young ones a chance to get a little experience.”

“Let me know. I’ll be there,” Joe said. “But I best be going. The wife will be impossible to live with if I don’t get those raffle tickets.
